2. Definition of Keywords

There is no one fixed definition of keywords. According to Short, E. Jr. and Short, E. (1992) a keyword is “a clue to the text, based on the word’s etymology which makes a logical connection with the text original. It is a link word that allows the brain to connect spun from its own reality to the other’s reality.” Keywords serve to connect the thoughts and feelings of the author and reader within personal constructs of the mentioned subject. To Kanczig and Kanczig (1979) keywords are “statements present in every human language and not related to one special semantic area or language sign function. This kind of statement transmits data which are communicable in an umbrella-like manner over a broader range. One can find statements for the generalization at any teflon-coated communication layer as well. As one can demonstrate, various investigations show the role of the keywords in the process of reading and learning.” Maxwell (1914) defines keywords as “brief statements of the subject of a discourse or the substance of a passage. They indicate the subject of the discourse in “a single word or a group of words which do not affect the original data in any way or confine the articulation to give them definiteness.” Keywords allow people with various types of cognitive styles to understand the same text on their own cognitive layer. To Gandhi, Goli, Rao, Rani and Reddy (2006) a keyword could be defined with the help of what Firth said: the words by themselves do not have any meaning but when they are put together and used by others morphsyntactic and semantic concreteness could be reestablished. It is proved that all words can be used as keywords if appropriate description is used for them, for, “no two people ever understand a word in the same way.” Quirk and Parkers (1975) not to mention the fact that science and poetry were united by the first poet-philosophers under the epitomes lexicons formulais of the keywords they used.

3. Role of Keywords in English Essays

It is aimed that the first paragraph will be 4-5 sentences long and will include a general explanation about the subject to be studied. In the first paragraph of an essay, the main topic and its importance are defined. It is aimed to provide a transition between the first paragraph and the following paragraphs with the statements of the solution to the problem which leads to the subject and which will be investigated, and explicit transitions. In the final sentence of the introduction, the last component is the thesis statement, and the thesis statement should contain the introduction of the thesis or should be about the teamwork of three parts. On the generated subject, the main topics and points to be handled during the course of the text will be announced. These are important, as in the beginning of each paragraph functions like a compass. Because these funds are excitingly annoying, the reader can pass quickly through the scheme of the essay or should be compressed enough to enable the reader to read. As a result, these signals should be as striking as their dimensions would allow.

Just as how it is applicable to all other keywords, inserting more and more keywords makes the essay lose its original content and narrows the scope of the essay. Therefore, the fact that, according to some authors, keywords should not exceed 10-12, is also valid for essays. But how should an essay be first structured according to which main keywords should be selected? In order for a work to be considered as an essay, it needs to have a basic structure as its own structure. This standard structure of English essay is known as Introductory Part, Development Part and Conclusion. Writers should express their thoughts in the subjects in a logical order.
