2. Georgetown Business School: A Historical Overview

The School’s beginnings, however, were modest. On November 11, 1935, after more than three years of effort on the part of its three primary originators—Dean J. Donald Kingsley, Vice President and Dean of the School of Foreign Service Father Edmund A. Walsh, S.J., and M. Langfish, member of the Georgetown College Board of Directors—a school was established that consisted of a total of 16 faculty members, 22 courses, and 34 students. These were modest beginnings for an enterprise that would eventually grow to become one of the leading American schools of business under the direction of such deans as Nelson T. Hartson, who would later be the Provost of the University, and John J. Nelligan, who served as the Dean for 21 years and later as the University’s President. The partnership with a vibrant and mission-driven School of Foreign Service would come to exemplify what would later become the distinctive set of core values and strategic commitments that would differentiate Georgetown’s identity as one of the leading private national universities in the United States.

Having been founded more than two decades after the establishment of Georgetown College, the precursor to Georgetown University, the School of Business Administration (renamed the McDonough School of Business in 1998) has a history that is remarkably rich, yet young by comparison to the overall history of its parent institution.
