The Benefits of Pursuing an MFA in Creative Writing
The purpose of the introduction to the MFA program and my own CPA is to provide general information to a prospective UBC applicant in an effort to assist in their decision about whether to apply, where to apply, and what graduate programs to pursue. I apologize for somewhat of an emphasis on the UBC program; this is only due to my own familiarity with it and conviction that it is an excellent program. Any information about other schools is from general sources and may not be completely accurate or up-to-date. This section was originally much more specific about my own research into a number of programs, and has been expanded and altered for the sake of general applicability and objectivity to help readers in all stages of the application process. Further general questions about graduate programs in general and the MFA can be conducted to a larger extent at the job wiki speak MFA forums. During my own time spent on this site, I found that asking questions to current students, graduates, and applicants at forums such as these helped me to gain a wealth of information which impacted my application decisions. All of the following information is not necessarily gleaned from one specific source, but is the sum total of a number of inquiries and research I have gathered during my time spent up to the beginning of my own graduate programs.
The advantages of joining the GradCafe MFA Creative Writing Class of 2024 are already too numerous to list on this website. Everything from the close community of writers to the wonderful writing workshops to the Culminating Experience has been exactly what I’d wanted out of my MFA experience. Even though the site is organized like a forum and many of the forum posts are old, you can get a lot of information and advice from current MFA students under the “results” tab. Here you can see when applicants for recent years received notification of acceptance or rejection, and there may be current students who have not yet officially made a “results” post, but are willing to communicate and give advice to others who have not yet made their decisions about what program to attend. One can also learn a lot about whether certain programs interview applicants and if so what to expect. The students I have met through the GradCafe have been great and word of mouth, “knowledge share” if you will, can be invaluable when searching for programs that are the right fit for you. I have recently been awarded the Hawaii Pacific University (Honolulu) Teaching Assistantship to teach a section of Composition 1000 (freshman comp), do tutoring in the writing center, and work 20 hrs/wk for which I will receive full tuition remission and stipend. Believe it or not, I found this job through the job information on the GradCafe. The job was posted through HPU Careers on their website. I have never visited the campus and I’m sure I would not have had this opportunity without finding it online through the job posting. The sources of information that have made my job application a success are that I received info from students currently in the program, advice on what to expect during the interview, and strategies for what it is that the hiring committee might have been looking for in a prospective TA. Overall, this job has been a step in the right direction toward the teaching of writing at the college level. My plan is for a springboard off of this experience to a writing center director and/or adjunct professor position, and the TA experience is fundamental.
When it comes to enhancing your writing skills, there is no better way to do so than by undertaking a degree in the subject; an MFA will be a very time consuming one, taking between 2 and 3 years to complete. You will find that you spend all of your time soaking up knowledge and advice from those within the industry, and chances are that there will be a great many suggestions made with regards to improving your craft. Once again, the environment that an MFA creates will be a boost to your writing, with students being expected to push their boundaries and learn new things. Many MFAs will require that their students take up teaching positions within the university as a way to supplement the course. In doing so, many find that they are able to learn a lot about their writing from a master’s perspective. The act of teaching a subject can often be the best way to learn it, and teachers are encouraged to constantly better themselves with regards to their knowledge. An MFA can give you a greater understanding of your own work and self-improvement can often be the best way to advance skills.
This is the most important factor for a lot of prospective MFA students. They want to work with accomplished writers. There are many reasons for this. Writers are insecure and envious by nature. There is nobody more qualified to tell aspiring writers about what it’s like to be a writer, the joys and the disappointments, than another writer who has been there. Secondly, the primary apprenticeship of writers happens at the level of the sentence. Who wouldn’t want to learn about the art of fiction, directly from someone who is a master of the form? A writer can write an accomplished article about the art of writing, but only a great fiction writer can demonstrate narrative art, complex characterization and the evocation of a sense of place. The same applies for poets learning from master poets and screenwriters learning from experienced screenwriters. This kind of instruction, where students learn the nuts and bolts of their craft, is only possible if the faculty members actually practice the form they teach. That’s not to say that it’s all about craft. One of the most valuable things a student can gain from a mentor is personal encouragement and support. Teachers can act as editors for their students, giving them feedback on their work and suggesting improvements. This demonstrates another valuable aspect of mentorship: the idea that the student and teacher are engaged in a collaborative activity aimed at helping the student. The student can even learn from observing the teacher’s own writing as the relationship shifts towards something more like peer-critique. This sort of individualized attention is really what makes an MFA.
The truth is most writers have day jobs, or at some point in their life will need a reliable source of income while they establish themselves as creative writers. There are many careers one can pursue without abating the poet within. Adjunct teaching is a common one. It can be a very rewarding job and at some colleges and universities it is the only path towards a tenured position. A student with an MFA in creative writing can choose from many different forms of teaching, and in many different environments. Lately I have seen a lot of ads for writing tutors and instructors in community colleges. This would allow aspiring writers to teach in an academic setting while fostering a focused and constructive workshop environment. Of course every writing student would like to apprentice under the aegis of a well-known and highly paid author, but this is very difficult to accomplish. Formal MFA professions for creative writing students might involve securing a teaching position to help develop curriculum, acting as a ghostwriter, or freelance writing and editing. These kinds of jobs usually require an MFA or something equivalent, and are most often obtained by people with an MFA.
One common thread linking different writers is the obstacle of bridging creativity with professionalism. Many are attracted to the ‘good’ life of promising job security and social acceptance and aspire to create a brilliant manuscript in an elegant cabin beside a lake. Some are resigned to trade dreams of book tours in foreign countries for clever and rewarding work; who wouldn’t want to earn a solid income writing for popular blogs or articles, creating witty social media content, or dabbling in marketing copy?
