The Benefits and Challenges of Online Homework Help Tutors

1. Introduction to Online Homework Help Tutors

Since 1999, the Coordinator of Outreach Programs and Services for Pines Learning and the Need Homework Help @ the Library Coordinator for the Franklin Township Public Library have guided the Greater New Brunswick chapter of the New Brunswick chapter of the CHRIST RSANDAL Association. The virtual homework help program runs during the fall, winter, and spring academic terms and provides free homework help to students across middle and high schools in Franklin Township, located in South Central New Jersey.

In recent years, there has been a lot of research published that has analyzed the benefits and challenges of online college and/or adult tutoring. This study contributes to the growing number of studies focusing on this area by establishing a foundation for understanding the adversity faced by online homework help tutors, a relatively untapped area of research. It also examines the ways in which online homework help tutors provide benefits and support to students.

In the literature, an online homework help tutor can be called an “after-school homework tutor,” “online homework tutor,” “homework help tutor,” “homework help homework tutor,” or “online tutor.” In this article, all terms are interchangeable, and the broader term of online homework help tutor was used.

Online tutoring services in the U.S. have grown over the past few years into a $1.25 billion industry. It has changed its focus from the primary students initially targeted, with the focus now on adult learners, athletes, musicians, and military members. Students may need online homework help for a variety of reasons, such as needing support for after-school homework, school projects, standardized exam preparation, or practical experience.

“Any online homework help tutors?” is the title of a January 2021 article by Sharon Starcher. Offline, “Rhetoric and Reality of Using Online Homework Help Tutors” is a paper published in 2001 by Gloriana González. Both titles are an indication of just how far online homework help tutoring has come as a touchpoint within the tutoring industry. Both titles also suggest the likelihood that parents and students would be interested in reading the articles.

2. Advantages of Using Online Homework Help Tutors

Online help is convenient, always available, and less expensive than engaging a private tutor. Also, since tutors are located in many different countries, there is never a seasonal shortage of tutors. A student selecting a tutor is not limited to selecting tutors who can easily commute to the student’s home. Instead, the student can look at the profiles and experience of tutors located anywhere in the world. No appointment is needed for a student to chat with a tutor. Most students will receive help within a half minute. All sessions occur online. In order to chalk up a successful chat session, the student will need to upload the problem so that the tutor can refer to it.

Online homework help tutors appeal to a great many students because students can receive personalized one-on-one help. They can get the help they need on a “just in time” basis, with no commuting or appointments. They can also pick from a greater variety of tutors, and it’s possible to use online software tools for problem solving. That’s just from the students’ perspective. Clearly, online tutoring has the potential to strengthen communication between students and the teacher. More frequent interaction between the teacher and student would seem a plausible way to improve learning. However, there isn’t research showing that online tutoring does improve learning.

3. Challenges and Solutions in Online Homework Help Tutoring

Individual attention, maintaining focus in an online environment, and academic honesty are challenges that are common to online homework help tutors and those that students and parents worry about before trying the service. Currently, this is still a self-selected group of students who receive help. These students come to the service on their own accord or they and their parents seek it out – or at least are amenable when nontraditional outreach, like a teacher suggesting online tutoring, is made. It may be that services are suggested out of desperation, so students are not comfortable admitting that they are seeking help and therefore are unavailable to describe their reasons. All of the tutors we interviewed said that one of the reasons tutoring is effective is that the student will admit when something is unclear during the session. Tutors will then change strategies or reteach the material. We wonder whether students are less likely to admit misunderstanding in online tutoring than for the in-person model, since some of these students use the service to complete work before a deadline. Students who use homework help will learn less than students who do not and as many students as others think use online homework help will not do as well in their courses at Westwood than students who did not use the service. In the mid-1990s, parents who were surveyed listed 7 major areas of concern about student performance in math. These were “teacher effectiveness (quality), decreasing motivation, overcrowding, decrease in discipline, decrease of teacher/parent partnership, lack of essential skills from the student and transportation.” None of these are explicitly mention concerns about existing educational support services. Clearly, there is room for services that supplement what is available within the traditional classroom.

Homework help students face all the challenges of traditional tutoring, such as being an effective communicator, understanding the material, and being able to teach. In online delivery, the primary challenge usually is the difficulty in providing written explanations to the student in a cost-effective manner only because of the inefficiencies of writing. In online tutoring, other technology-related issues have been identified, though the technology seems to work fine most of the time. Problems related to the student’s browser software and operating system (which affects tutoring tools like chat and interactive whiteboards) do arise since we do not know in advance what mix of hardware and software our students are using. Browser incompatibility problems can be difficult to resolve over the phone. The larger limitations are that we can’t see the student, and so unless the student is speaking easily on the phone, it’s almost impossible to gauge tone of voice or body language.

4. Best Practices for Maximizing the Effectiveness of Online Homework Help Tutors

Quality. Tutors help students with their web-based math problems and interact with students using an online whiteboard resource. Only some online tutoring services offer multiple communication methods, such as video chat, voice (audio), or instant messaging. As well, you may find some online tutoring services limit the use of email, which may cause the students’ questions to not be as concise or comprehensive as one would like. Additionally, email tutoring solutions can be less expensive than other tutoring methods.

Problem solving. Online tutors can assist students to work on math problems by using the whiteboard for oral interaction. They can also demonstrate the completion of math problems through shared computer technology applications that allow for the student to be shown math problem strategies. In the other subjects, tutors can help students who need to expand ideas in their papers and help them to clarify instructions and requirements. While few online tutoring services can offer the holistic in-home tutoring approach to keep students focused, they can provide the same level of personalized care and academic support by using software to create a personal profile for students. This profile may include previous tutoring sessions, school information, the type of assistance the student is looking for, as well as what motivates the student.

The Homework Help program in Salt Lake City, Utah, provides an online tutorial that integrates unique multimedia presentations with engaging graphics and student interactions. Research into Homework Center tutoring indicates the benefits of providing group tutoring. In order to provide a similar interactive environment for many students and limit the number of tutors needed, some online programs have created multiple student chat-room-style areas to provide group help over the Internet. These areas can be used to answer students’ questions as a group if students’ questions are the same or similar, or students may be directed to an existing presentation online if it covers the concept that they are struggling with. The use of such techniques in online tutoring may ensure that tutors are responding to students in ways that are engaging and that are most useful to students.

Teachers who are considering offering online homework help can learn from successful tutoring programs that have been developed by universities, libraries, and test preparation companies to promote effective learning in an online environment. Some good practices of online tutoring include using a range of multimedia resources to engage a variety of learning styles, such as digital flashcards, video instruction, online manipulatives (such as virtual geoboards), and links to appropriate websites.
