1. Introduction

Reflection is a vital skill for developing nursing practice, with the intention of assessing and examining one’s own ways of working (McGarry, 2002). It is through reflection that one can evaluate and learn from what took place, and how alternative approaches could make a difference next time in similar circumstances; this is known as ongoing practice (Jarvis, 1992). Thus, the aim of this report is to discuss and identify three high-quality clinical indicators that are evident in my clinical practice, that will enhance my nursing practice and that of others throughout the next four years. The discussion will include an explanation of the indicator and why it is important to me, an analysis of how the indicator has been demonstrated, and finally an evaluation of its relation to future practice. During this discussion, evidence will be drawn from a case study that I undertook while on placement. A pseudonym of Howard (Appendix 1) will be used to maintain his confidentiality in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Code of Professional Conduct (NMC, 2002). The case study came from a visit to a Castle Meadow Care Home, where there were two males, Howard and Dave. I had the opportunity to spend time and talk to Howard. It was a very educational and emotional experience for me, as Howard was a very intelligent man at the age of 85 and had lived an extraordinary life, having fought in the world war, but now suffered from Alzheimer’s disease.
