Crafting a Compelling AP Literature Essay
When about to write an essay on an AP Literature topic, the teacher has three major questions: Can the student understand the abstract concept of the question, or is it so esoteric that a reader from another universe could not discern the riddle to ‘friend’ Plagiarism.com? The second question evaluates if the student has read the work. The third question really asks the universe—is there an ideal novel, play, poem that could satisfy all the questions? This essay provides strategies on how to successfully craft a title for the AP Literature and Composition paper. I will also use a continued passage to reinforce the strategies. When the passage ends, continue onward…
Introduction. Although it is not universally true, those who are fluent readers make the best writers. Good writers also understand the different purposes of writing and know what each type demands. Good readers have masterful command of written language; it is input for the writer. Generally speaking, it is the academic student who is a prolific reader. Teachers, in turn, seeking to challenge these special students, assign increasingly rich and enriching novels, essays, and plays, with the anticipation that the student begins to mold thoughts and language in rich and complex ways. Writing about literature requires deftness in writing and a major capacity in understanding implicitly, love of language games, a satisfaction in self-revelation, and continual inquisitiveness about the school imaginative mind and human behavior. The excellent response to the prompt means that students have taken the time to read and think deeply about what they have read; this is what we ultimately strive to achieve.
Here is the ARC Formula for a thesis statement: Assertion, Reasoning, Conclusion. A good thesis should go beyond merely stating what happens within the text’s plot. It should provide a structure of the paper’s discussion/analysis of the topic, and often suggests conclusions or opinions possible. In other words, a strong, pertinent thesis should matter; it should press on the boundaries, revealing doubt, demonstrating long and deep awareness and understanding. It can drag the mind through questioning and contrasting, a tension that is, in the beginning, frightening but always rewarding. Strong thesis statements are written with poignancy, polish novels of thought, poise, knowledge, and may seem creative, smarter and more probing. If well crafted, using the ARC format, your thesis will keep your reader interested and excited!
If you become a ‘good’ literary essay writer, including developing a thesis statement will come automatically as you develop and evaluate evidence from the text and then justify a certain interpretation by ‘seeing’ how something within a specific literary context helps you understand a character, plot, tone, message, etc. presented by the author you’re speaking on. Nevertheless, by understanding some of the ways a thesis statement can “look,” you can attempt to make certain that your literature essay is on the right track and will be compelling to readers. Almost all of your literature essays will be about analyzing mainly these text-based elements: character(s), theme(s), plot, tone/setting, imagery and symbolism.
This exercise, just by itself, however, involves more than author craft; furthermore throughout a work, can be a tool for understanding tone, point of view, setting, and other aspects of literature. In a longer story, you may be able to point out larger patterns in those elements of a story and add commentary to amplify the points. Both forms of symbolism can be easily located as long as you look for them, and these help an audience better understand a story. When looking at the rhythm and structure of a story through the use of sentence structure, an audience reviews the form of a story. Doing this allows an audience to focus better upon the overall rhythm of the piece, which can affect point of view, tone, and even setting. This then allows an audience to play an active role in a story by allowing them to think within the same rhythm as the text itself.
When an author introduces a work, it is typical to see a multitude of devices being used stylistically to direct the plot. Making note of these literary devices, their functions, and the effects they have on the work as a whole should be among the most important analytical tools you provide in your essay. One section of an essay could include an analysis of how an author uses irony or tone, which are elements of style and inform an audience about the story. This will help an audience determine a story’s effect while evoking its function. Craftachers are often revealed by examining patterns of behavior. When these patterns are identified, tonal shifts, motivations, and character actions come into focus.
Often, when readers reach the conclusion, they sigh with relief that the essay is done, and don’t spend much time on the conclusion paragraph. Protect yourself against this in your own essays, and both try to write and read for the best possible conclusion to your essay. It’s an important part of your essay. It’s your chance to re-state your thesis, which should also be a restating of all of your main points in a more specific and direct way. It’s also your chance to remind the reader how your particular argument connects to the central ideas of the literature you are analyzing. Never let readers walk away from your essay with the question: “So what?” and realize the full importance of your assertions. This is crucial. Keep an eye on your time. It’s better to complete the essay with time to spare than to rush it last minute. Even if your sentences and paragraphs are well-structured, and you offer the reader an insightful thesis of substantial development in the body of your essay, readers will keep your essay downgraded if time runs out in revision. No matter how polished an essay you have written, time lost turns into fewer words to evaluate. If the conclusion is shortchanged, the essay will be read as an inaccurate, casual treatment of the text and doomed to a low final score. Watch the clock.
Unlike in some other forms of essay writing, structure is a crucial part of the AP Literature essay format. Your essay should have an introductory paragraph with a thesis statement, two or more full paragraphs of relevant development in your argument, then a conclusion restating your logical summation of the material you need to prove the validity of your thesis. In a 45-minute essay, this is more than enough time to give the reader a sense of your central argument and a few key areas of development to justify it. The clear grammatical organization means that your reader will understand your central thesis, and likewise, understand your development. That’s crucial to maintain a solid argument that builds logically toward your thesis. Don’t waste time on your introductory paragraph. A repeated statement of the thesis is less important than development in your body writing.
A quick and easy way to begin your conclusion is to review your main points. Give some insight back into the arguments the way they were covered. Refer back to the main idea about the theme and mood and tone, etc. This works especially well if you are doing a very factual essay. It will not work as well with a 1-9 essay. In a 1-9 essay, the reader would expect you to incorporate a more critical interpretation and final reflection about what you have learned on your journey and supporting it with good evidence. Failing to refer back to earlier paragraphs or topics increases the reader’s growing sense of compartmentalization they may feel you are taking shortcuts to a good conclusion, rather than truly synthesizing the ideas in your well-rounded discussion.
Your conclusion is related to your introduction and therefore should connect back to it. The same way that your intro lets your reader know what they will be learning about and what your argument is, your conclusion should summarize the essay and your argument. In your conclusion, you should have a final word on the topic or provide additional reflections. It should also tie your essay together by reinforcing your thesis and summarizing your major points. If you don’t like any of these final tricks, include a provocative question at the end of your essay and allow your reader to ponder the topic further and then develop an intellectual curiosity to pursue it. Also, if you are using a bulk of your essays, your topic sentences for the beginning of your body paragraphs into your conclusion. It will make organizing your thoughts easier and your essay will come full circle.
