Exploring the Impact of Book Reviews on Understanding the Human Body
As I began serving as editor of the book review column, it was necessary to consider both the quality of contributions as well as their potential to provide useful information. The end result yielded far fewer book reviews within this volume because I wanted them to be more comprehensive than cursory reviews briefly summarizing a book’s contents.
The concept of embodiment plays a critical role in feminist theory. Johnson and Bruh (2000) argue, for example, that while some forms of censorship that absolutely prohibit reading about particular body topics would be valuable to Americans because such books attempt to challenge dominant conceptions of ideal bodies, others serve the same type of role as other potentially traumatizing or harmful materials, i.e. their worth is limited by other concerns. We find two examples of other types of positive body books: critically described books about classroom experiences and less critically described works meant to assist particular groups of people to understand their body experiences.
In this section, we present evidence that books cover a greater diversity of topics than do college-level science learning materials. Given the significant impact of pernicious misinformation evident in existing science literacy studies, our results suggest a potential source of facts and perspectives on human biology distinct from the routine science diet most people encounter. If similar diversity differences persist across times, it suggests that regular encounters with books may provide consumers with a corrective mechanism necessary to counter the more sensationalist manias that periodically grip the American cultural scene.
Unfortunately, some academic authors seem to write self-help books targeted towards popular audiences just to make money. There is a perverse incentive for academics to disseminate a sugar-coated version of academic research to create an attractive and marketable sales niche within the popular science genre. Although some book reviews based on this genre partially critique the excessive exuberance of the book’s hypotheses, entirely these books are beautifully packaged, briskly narrated, and macro-overgeneralized with a philosophical interpretation that does not challenge the will to power that is contrary to the actual state of academia. Data collection frequently results in various neat examples to correspond with some theme of the book, and some corrections to common misconceptions. The relatively undisputed premises are otherwise generalized clean in descriptive, friendly, family-friendly, or familiar language.
Assessing the impact and role of book reviews for general-interest works of history, biography, social sciences, popular science, and fiction has been a long-standing and important area of inquiry for researchers interested in popular communication about academic knowledge. The literature in the social sciences on the assessment of the value of book reviews for popular science books is about as robust as the literature on how to write a mediocre sociology book. There is little agreement about which characteristics of a book review will appeal to a potential reader other than length, but, shockingly, book reviews that challenge the nature of academic knowledge, that are thorough in scope and critical of the book, statistically and somehow appeal the elitist nature of its reader are more worthy of publication in a general social science journal compared to a fluff and praise-filled journal article.
The emergence of merged social technology blogs allows more publications to focus on human anatomy areas. These blogs allow articles on a wide array of sub-specializations to be listed and accessible through postings which are linked to the names of their highly accessed journals. Consequently, contributors to these blogs are often from the top of their respective fields. These top lists are ranked according to subscription by the institutional Medicine. Hence, key review articles might limit the use of other rankings as a performance yardstick of anybody with an internet journal bit. Stimulating healthy academic debate between the alleged rivalry between established commercial online services might then help the fields of anatomy and physiology education, aiding research planning, and in concluding research precedence in journal selection for submission and aiming for the widest available audience. Since the age of the most visited medical blogs report construction during research, these preliminary post-publication activities serve as an investment worth considering in the educational and research contributions of others.

Hence, they have great potential for learning, teaching, assessment, and public understanding of these research-intensive subjects from these main sectors. With the impact of book review readership continuing to increase in anatomy and physiology education, the effect of these book reviews may exert even more influence. However, as academic debates in publishing remain vigorous, it is imperative that multidimensional scholarly sources are instrumental in informing anatomy and physiology educators’ and researchers’ decisions in appropriating time and resources to use and conduct research into these publishing outlets. The type of book review and its academic quality and the human anatomy content contained are necessary to command increasing influence in anatomy and physiology education. Therefore, it is imperative for critical stakeholders to build the best evidence to evaluate, negotiate, and incorporate these book reviews in anatomy and physiology education.
