1. Introduction

I am sure there have been moments of stress and anxiety about the task of starting a master’s thesis or Ph.D. dissertation. There is no arguing the magnitude of this academic task. It is the culmination of a very long process, an educational journey that is coming to an end. The topic that lies within should be one that is well thought through and meaningful. This is, after all, the last task and requires a lot of, perhaps new to this, self-discipline. The rewards are great and will open many new doors of opportunity for the student. The dissertation is a formal, stylized document used to argue your thesis. The thesis must be well thought through and clarified. The logic behind your argument must flow with clear and concise evidence to back your claims. A good thesis is an endeavor with a heavy responsibility attached. The topic should be within your new field of study, something that will further development it. This text will address every facet of preparing and producing a well-written thesis. With a heavy weight in research methods, the student must find a source that is an exemplar of the desired topic to be finished. Here, one must avoid ‘cutting corners’ and settle for something less, always search for the better. Acquiring information is dependent on quality resources. Often times, to a student’s dismay, good information and good resources are hard to come by. Although it may be time-consuming, a trip to major universities and libraries is recommended. Going there will give access to many quality resources and possibly becoming more informed with direct contact with professors or professionals in that given field. Always remember to take notes on resources and have sufficient material for referencing.

2. Choosing a Topic

Considering the above points and the situation, my topic is “Employment and working conditions in the Indian Community Pharmacy sector for a graduate pharmacist.” This topic has much significance with respect to my future career. It deals with the present scenario of our healthcare system where today pharmacy has emerged as an important discipline in healthcare in comparison to MBBS or MD (resource). Today, pharmacy students have a good opportunity to develop their career by joining companies, doing private practice, working in a healthcare center, or by working as pharmacists (gap). Though there are ample opportunities, most of them don’t have a clear idea of employment and working conditions at each level, which is an important factor to decide the career path. This topic is having current relevance and future prospects for graduating students. This is because I myself can get the necessary information in practice to share with others (interest, resource). But the most difficult part is to get data on working conditions at each level. This might be time-consuming. But at least I will get a topic that will also help me to decide my own career path. So on the whole, it satisfies almost all the considerations.

A topic should be chosen only after a careful consideration of the existing literature, previous research, current gaps in knowledge, resources, and time constraints. It should be neither too broad so that you cannot collect data over all aspects or factors, nor too narrow. A topic should be quite current and updated. It should have significance and implications. While choosing a topic, keep in mind the available sources of information and your interest in the topic. The timeline of your research or time left for completing your dissertation is also an important factor. All these considerations might be combined but never satisfied. Sometimes some considerations may overrule others. But an explicit awareness of the considerations will save you from lots of tension in the later stages. Always take a second opinion before finalizing any topic. An expert’s advice always has its unique significance.

3. Research and Literature Review

It is important to find information that is directly related to your topic. Using search engines such as Google is not recommended because the information is not tailored to search for academic content. Using online journal articles is a crucial way of accessing relevant information. Ensure that you save each article as you go along, there is nothing worse than an hour of trawling through irrelevant articles to try to find that one you were thinking of! Reading and noting widely is integral at this stage, and will save a lot of time later. It can be frustrating to have spent hours reading an article only to find that it is not directly related to your work. A comprehensive search and making sure that you understand the literature will help you come up with a provisional thesis or an answer to your question. The literature review involves investigating the research that has been done on the topic in the past and is the cornerstone of any research project. You will find that there will be some research done that is directly related to your topic that can be used as a direct comparison, often cited within your literature, and some research that is more general that will help you to have a better understanding of the context in which your topic exists. Now is also a good time to define your keywords. Keeping a diary of your search and keywords, including articles of interest and 5W’s about the article (What? Where? Who? Why? When?), will be extremely helpful later when writing your bibliography.

4. Writing and Structuring Your Dissertation

Table of Contents Insert the table of contents after the abstract. This should list all the sections and subsections within the paper. Be sure to list these one depth below the other and indented.

Abstract The abstract is a succinct and accurate representation of what the paper is about. It should contain the research topic, research question, participants, methods used, results, conclusions, and recommendations. The abstract is written at the end of the writing process and is to be a guide to the writing that follows. With this in mind, it is written in the past tense. The length of the abstract should be restricted to 150-250 words.

Acknowledgements Generally, an acknowledgement is a way for the author to say a brief word of thanks to those who contributed to the project.

Declaration Your declaration should be comprehensive. The common format is: I hereby declare that this is my own and personal work, except where stated, and that all sources of help and information have been acknowledged. I also understand that if at any time it is shown that I have significantly misrepresented someone else’s work or done so with intent; this may lead to disciplinary procedures.

Title Page Your title page should contain a running head that is flush left at the top of the page and a page number that is flush right at the top of the page. The title of your paper should be in the upper half of the page and should be centered between margins. After the title, you should list your name, followed by your university. If there is more than one author, you should list the names in the order they appear on the title page.

5. Conclusion and Finalizing Your Dissertation

This should be the easy part. i.e based on your conclusions, what do you suggest to next be done? This can be anything. For a health research-based dissertation, a successful research would green light a change in practice and in turn improving quality of life. An investigation which found little amount of evidence to support a given theory might require more a divisive experimentation. This will be your scholar calling.

5.1 Recommendations:

One of the major aspects of a good dissertation is that it adds to the body of knowledge in the field. Needless to say, this is often the only piece of work that will be read and remembered, so it is important that your dissertation is professionally done. The final stage and chapter in your dissertation research paper is the conclusion and this is where you’re most likely going to be making recommendations, whether these be for future research, a government body, new legislations or specific organisations. It is a good idea to assume that the readers of your dissertation will know little about the subject so you will have to tell them what they need to know to understand. Make sure in this stage to be focused on whether the results support or contradict specific theories. A major factor in writing a dissertation is time. This demands a much more detailed and elaborated proposal. You may be required to produce one or more chapters for assessment part way through your research. The conclusion should be clear and relatively brief. It must not be a cross-referencing puzzle, or a barrage of data. All the conclusions of the research are to be substantiated with proper reference to the literature and it must be free from speculation. It is just so confirming and so an easy way out to fill up the concluding chapter. Many times students are required to write a proposal for their dissertations and this proposal is a very detailed and described account of what you plan to do in your whole research, and how you intend to do it. This is a great way to make sure all your final year efforts and activities are so channeled so that rewriting a dissertation is very much plausible. Well it might be a life saver. This compares to. Usually a prompt will come in the form of a proposition or directive. This requires a great deal of thought and resources, or possibly it might be so we pray, the demonstration of an already completed extensive study. The final write up where all this is headed – is your dissertation. This chapter tends to be much shorter than the Discussion. It is not an obligatory chapter to write; however, it is useful. It gets your own special and resource-consuming work in context and the results which were hopefully found. It is a real shame to waste such quality writing and potentially strong argument as found in The results explained. A good Introduction is crucial. For an ‘average length’ (10-20 pgs) dissertation, you should give yourself 2-3 weeks to prepare. REMEMBER: Writing is the sharpened, focused expression of thought and study. As you have written your dissertation, you have improved your abilities and this can be much rewarding, as the dissertation leads to the acquisition of a higher degree. Unfortunately in academia, money is too often a great motivator. So it can be a good idea to begin outlining the chapter with the motivating major Scrooge McDuck. What is the most rewarding way to spend a pence in research? What of it would make the lucrative Scrooge part with his money? A chance to further study? To solve a problem which nags him? Or to simply make the grade and put his name to a piece of work? This is commonly the most interesting and resourceful, find out where the money came from. Bask in your findings with Mr. McDuck.
