1. Introduction

Descriptive writing is powerful. Everything in our lives kisses and touches us. We can describe these moments using our senses: what we see, what we hear, what we touch, what we smell, and what we taste. Imagery is important to so many different forms of art and writing—music, theater, film, poetry, the humdrum of product marketing—how we see, touch, and acknowledge these must be properly explained. Textual descriptions build our knowledge—whether that knowledge is based on visual patterns for application in science and mathematics or explanations of tales for literature and history—a well-defined narrative will oftentimes do the trick.

Descriptive writing is a key component of many writing programs and lends itself to a multitude of instructional writing characteristics. It is also highly beneficial when associated with creative writing concepts. Teachers have long used descriptive writing to get their students interested in and engaged with a writing assignment. Teachers present a topic related to a story or object for students to write about. With that topic in place, students develop an interest in their writing assignment that keeps them on focus. The end result – a descriptive piece of writing helps them build skills they may not even realize they are learning.

2. Importance of Descriptive Writing

If the writers of a dream, for instance, elaborate the meaning of the dream, and the writers, on the contrary, reveal the measures of their own soul by embracing their writing to the principles of life externally omnipresent, the artistic genius would be indeed placed between these two complimentary halves. It indicates that either would fail to exist without the other, and once positioned with affectionate affection, the complex peculiarity that describes the cosmos and continues to be open is what is important, not who he or she is. Descriptive writing is most advantageous in helping guide the reader in to a more compelling and vivid understanding of the spectrum of other aspects when the groundwork needs to be set so to create in the readers’ criticize realistic memories.

Descriptive writing is the basis of strong impressionism in reading. The ability to pin down observations in a way that makes it possible for both you and the reader to more clearly “see” what is being written about is key to descriptive writing. The knowledge that enters the heart through the eyes is the maker of raw emotion. This is illustrated in writing when a blind man who has operated a window-cleaning service, moves into a flat decked up with small always well-scrubbed frames, the reader has no prior connection to the man or his apartment, plumbing fixtures or gear required to maintain a house; yet the apartment seems absolutely familiar to us, because it has been partially formed by the power of their household to evoke sentiment. To pen evocatively, the writer drives the readers in to the author with details that bestow that unforgettable aphorism of personality with all its unique marks of job or emotions.

3. Techniques for Effective Description

In narratives, the description helps to establish time of day, location, objects surrounding the situation. In expository writing, the description accompanied with reasons and the explanation is what is being conveyed. The use of descriptive details brings the audience to the reality of the author’s experience. Descriptive writing has a unique power and appeal, as it evokes sights, smells, sounds, textures, and tastes. However, as a writer, you should not rely too heavily on the use of imagery in your writing, as this essay illustrates. Did you remember to include the essential “showing” details?

Techniques for effective description. Writers use a variety of techniques to help the reader see what they are describing. Some of these techniques relate specifically to the five senses, while others help to create a mood or provide comparison. As you read and evaluate each of the following Part A and Part B sections, keep in mind the focus of descriptive writing. Ask yourself which techniques you feel present the strengths of the author’s descriptive work. Part A. Descriptive Techniques using the Senses. Descriptive writing is a description of something. It could be a person, place, thing, emotion, or experience. The author is allowed more artistic freedom when writing in descriptive form. Descriptive writing is critical for the effectiveness of informational writing.

4. Examples of Descriptive Writing

Right away your eyes sting as they kiss the greatness; and, it only takes seconds for a toast of your body. The air smells of solidified oxygen, crisp and clean; a steaming summer stew filled with the taste of oak that growls softly, signifying the grilling wooden ends of hot dogs and hamburgers. It’s a gazed-upon full day, bathed in sunbeam zillionths, intensified dangly strings of summer’s stagnant breath burgeoning from asphalt. Cement possibilities forever wander out of reach, so hopelessly distant. Eye-thickening haze hovers above. Stand and gawk in the golden heat of a barbecue. Swear unto the sizzling end of summer, a sun-licked grove climber lobbing earth rays.

Examples of descriptive writing. This summer day, like all the rest, smells of something barbecue. The invitational barbecue has “today” written all over it. Barbecue is prepared, slow-cooked, and ready to savor by late-afternoon—harvest time, and there’s not a smidgen of a breeze to offset the heat. The sky is hot-searing-sunny, illuminated crystal clear blue—best day for a barbecue—the azure overhead drenched in sun. The dome cooks you. With the intensity of manmade ovens, the earth sweats, redefining “hot” as you being devoured.

5. Conclusion

When readers have a vivid image of who your character is and why they are put into a particular situation, they will want to continue reading to learn more about the character and their failures and successes. Although readers buy your book to see the action in terms of your plot, they more than likely don’t keep it for long without a captivating character that they care about. Try to weave more descriptions of who your character is and why they are doing what they are doing as your story starts resolving. Most importantly, offer your reader a major transformation on behalf of your main character by the end. Without change, your reader likely won’t care about your character or their future. Coming up with material that is sure to interest your reader is the heart of compelling writing!

When your readers experience certain emotions based on what the character is doing and/or feeling, your readers will want to keep reading to see how the character will resolve the conflict. Whether your character is facing something physically dangerous or emotionally difficult, readers will keep reading to see how your character decides to confront the problem and the resolution that follows. In other words, readers will continue reading to see the “main course” or most important part of the story. In conclusion, it’s important for writers of any genre to focus more on description. The closer your reader is connected to your character, the more your reader will immerse themselves into your story.
