1. Introduction

Humans are naturally curious, and as a result, we typically enjoy learning about the past. Whether it takes the form of pondering the rise and fall of ancient civilizations or musing about the lives of key historical figures, history is a great way to learn about how the modern world came to be. And it’s no exaggeration to say that our world has been shaped by historical events. When we say “historical events”, we’re not just talking about battles and declarations of independence. Historical events can take the form of any significant occurrence that has had an impact on a place or a group of people. This might include economic events such as the Industrial Revolution, social events such as the suffragette movement or modern occurrences that are now studied as “history”, such as the 9/11 attacks. And the modern world – including every aspect of society, from our everyday lives to our social groups – has been influenced by these events. Despite the great importance of understanding the impact that history has on the world we live in, it is often disregarded as a subject. Many people dismiss history as only considering the past when it is of vital importance to understand how the past has shaped the present. Studying history can also provide guidance and structure. For example, understanding the fall of great civilizations can be useful backdrops to understanding prevalent global issues today.

2. The Influence of Ancient Civilizations

Ancient Mesopotamia, often referred to as the cradle of civilization, was the world’s first human civilization – about 10,000 years ago. Mesopotamia created many important ideas, technologies, and ways of living that are still used at present. For example, the Mesopotamians developed the earliest known writing system which used wedge-shaped marks hammered into clay tablets. This system was used in the whole Near East for over a thousand years. Some people wrote thousands of tablets using cuneiform. Many Mesopotamian writings are on topics such as math, science, and literature. The Euphrates and the Tigris, the two most important rivers of the region, gave the civilization its name – the land between the rivers. The land was rich in soil and good for farming. As a result, the population increased quickly. In such an environment, the first cities in the world like Ur and Uruk were formed. These cities had the significance of being both the management centers of the civilization and the houses of the gods. In matters of political system, the Mesopotamians established the first states in human history. The kingships were considered as a sacred office. When the first empire in history, the Akkadian Empire showed up, its king, Sargon the Great, ordered the first set of laws in the world to be written which later influenced the Babylonian legal code, known as the Code of Hammurabi. Hammurabi’s code made a great impact on the by-then world; for example it inspired the law makers of the still famous Roman Empire. Also, the ideas of having a central ruler and the rule of law, written and not made up by one’s mind, were later adopted by many civilizations. Hammurabi’s code as well as his conquest and unification of Mesopotamia also inherited by his Amorites dynasty. The Amorites blended into the local Mesopotamian traditions and the third dynasty of Ur was established. Another example is the inhabitants and traditions of Mesopotamia were influenced by different civilizations. Gutians and Elamites from the Zagros Mountains and Persia, Syrians, Canaanites and the Israelites from the west in the Levant and the Kassites from the modern day Iran all conquered and reigned the place for centuries. Due to the impact of outside forces, Mesopotamian ways of living and cultural features spread to other places in the Near East. The mix of different cultures and the transmission of Mesopotamian views through the ages all made the civilization’s impact on the world profound. In general, Ancient Mesopotamia has contributed to the foundation of human civilization in more ways than we can anticipate. Modern society has inherited a lot of ideas and technologies from this ancient civilization such as the first known writing system and the rule of law. Every time when a modern legal system prevails, the influence of the Code of Hammurabi is there. Whenever we write on a piece of paper with ink or type on a computer’s keyboard, we recall the great intellectual invention of cuneiform. Every time when we discuss the concept of a city not only as a settlement but also as a religious and political center, the modern society has inherited a lot of ideas and technologies from this ancient civilization such as the first known writing system. Modern society does not only has inherited a lot of ideas and technologies from this ancient civilization such as the first known writing system from Ancient Mesopotamia.

3. The Impact of Wars and Revolutions

Wars and revolutions can have an effect on military and government structure. In recent history, one of the most important effects wars have had is a change in the role of women. During the Revolutionary and Civil War eras, women’s roles changed drastically. Women played a very important supportive role during the Revolutionary and the Civil Wars. They did things like making bullets, mending uniforms, working as nurses, cooking, and washing for the soldiers. They even went to the battlefields and provided moral support for the men who were fighting. These actions changed the way women were viewed in society, from then on and when, slowly, change starts to take place in the lifestyle and social norms of women in the post-war period. Over time, women have been given more rights and they have seen those rights protected by the government. In World War I, women were entering the workforce and providing vital support for the troops and the nation. The government recognized these efforts and gave women more rights and a way for some types of reform. During the First World War, women began to serve the nation as nurses and that continued on through the century. In the Second World War, women can serve as nurses, mechanics, air-raid wardens, and some even as soldiers. As a result, in 1948, President Truman signed the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act which, at the time, was seen as a huge leap forward for women’s rights and even that act is still seen as very significant for women in the military today. Also, it became the first federal acknowledgement that women can serve the nation in a military capacity.

4. The Role of Historical Figures

At the close of the 18th century and in the early 19th century, the European historians began writing in a more secular and scientific manner. This intellectual shift was a part of a larger movement known as the Enlightenment. Guizot, often recognized as the father of the philosophy of history, considers history as the record of the development of human societies. Hegel, a German philosopher who lived in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, offers a view of history as being directed by God’s will toward a specific purpose. At the same time, he argues that it is the great men and women of history who uniquely change history by being the first to undertake particular feats, or by seizing on the particular social and cultural opportunities around them, or simply by their exceptional abilities. Hegel’s views led to a more abstract and philosophical form of writing about history that focuses on explanations of events and struggles, as opposed to placing specific emphasis on particular historical figures. On the other hand, another German historian of the 19th century, Leopold Ranke argued that history is a science and it should be approached with as much scientific objectivity as possible. He believed that historians must strive to simply show us what happened (report history) and as it was, without bringing their own interpretation into the analysis. Ranke is known for abandoning the examination of large general causes in history and instead focusing on close historical analysis using primary source documents. He also placed a major emphasis in using such sources in his writing, and this desire for a clear reliance on solid evidence in historical writing continues to be a significant part of modern historical practices today. After the 19th century, the Western world saw technological and societal progress that led to the Computer Revolution in the latter half of the 20th century. This era saw an even further shift in the approach and study of history with the advent of the internet and especially after the introduction of advanced search engines. The increase in digitization of historical documents and the ability to host entire libraries’ worth of information online has turned the study of history into a much more public and easily accessible field. Because of the work by many generations of professional historians in documenting and cataloging and digitizing historical records, what has led to the most advanced age in history known as the Digital Age, the internet provides a wealth of information on history and different opinions and interpretations on historical events and methods for historical research. From this development, new sub-disciplines emerged such as digital history, which examines the past by looking at digital creation, preservation, and analysis of historical information, and the study of the impact of these techniques on our understanding of history. Digital history applies new tools such as geographical information systems and statistical data to examine and analyze all forms of historical records, documents, and multimedia. It opens new areas of research and questions for historians that were once previously inaccessible and has changed both the mode of historical analysis and types of analysis that are possible.
