How to Create an Effective Homework Planner

1. Introduction

Homework is a part of schooling that most people have experienced in their lives. Regardless of their importance, however, homework assignments can become only partial assessments of student progress and act as fronts to demonstrate students that their effort affects the results. In order for students to experience actual improvement through large homework loads, homework assignments should contain a sense of purpose when it comes to demonstrating their own growth. Everyday lounge conversations with students regarding homework often focused on whether they should finish right away, even if the outcome is poor, or wait a little bit until they can receive help. When creating homework assignments, identifying what type of homework assignment the teacher is giving to the student is always the first thing in my mind. Even if the assignment is a worksheet, quiz, or any other type of assignment, identifying an introduction, classroom management, homework placement strategy, student organization, reteaching, and completion time can assist with providing purpose and improving a student’s experience with homework.

2. Setting Up Your Homework Planner

Now is the fun part: setting up your student planner! Start by labeling your subject dividers and putting them in your binder. Underneath the last divider, place your spiral notebook. (Before, when our youngest was in Kindergarten through 3rd grade, she used a composition book that had a cut-off top and that worked too… so don’t think you have to go out and buy a spiral notebook if you have many composition books in the house). Add some filler paper at the very end.

If your child has the kind of teacher at school that gives out tons of papers each day (worksheets, etc.), then you’ll want to use some tabbed pocket folders for each subject to keep the papers in when they come home (don’t buy these until you know how many papers you are getting from school this year for sure to make sure you buy enough tabbed folders) and until after you know how many tabs will be in your binder. Those will fit in your binder with all your other sections.

3. Organizing Your Tasks

At the first stage – it’s planning and analysis before doing something. This does not require much time, but creates a more understandable and clear look at all matters. Better to sit for 10-20 minutes and structure everything, than to spin around the same homework for weeks. The spine stakes will lie in the far corner, and you yourself will feel much more confident and comfortable. In the second stage, everything will depend on your own attention, but the prepared rough will prompt where to move before a certain time.

When we have a lot of tasks, we often want to do everything fast and go home or spend time in the circle of our family and friends. Our lives are constantly evolving, so instead of finishing one task at a time, we end up with 25 tasks that are slowly driving a person into the abyss of stress. For instance, you wanted to write an essay, then get home, then eat, but the traffic jam allowed you to do only one task! These are the everyday stress and anxiety, which then go to bed and then fall asleep. “Homework planner” is more effective and generally interesting than daily plans or banal lists.

4. Utilizing Time Management Techniques

In addition to a printable daily planner, add reminders with electronic tools. Set visual and audible alarms as appointments or events. Consider color-coded categories within a major homework block. This will give added prompts, prompting motivation and time management. Use Note software to add voice reminders, or worded prompts and alarms as desired. Voice notes especially can be efficient for non-visual, auditory learner personalities. An audible message – or brief recording – can also remind students of why something is automatically prioritized. For advanced users, use applications that allow reminders that pop on screen (if using a computer, organize reminders by one’s own style) or pop to cell phone via e-mail or instant messaging. Also, use cell phone reminders for on-the-go activities. Being away from traditional resources, students will have benefactors to time management and motivation.

Another effective aspect of a homework planner is to incorporate learned time management techniques, while adding the benefit of being self-structured for convenient updating and modification. Have the students create a printable, editable chart, each making him or herself responsible for keeping track of what needs to be accomplished. The Design Gallery within Microsoft Office’s Word or Excel is wonderful for the purpose. Choose from various forms that visually aid students in organizing thoughts and assignments. The planner will then serve as a great motivational guide. Update it daily to keep it current. Reference it often for reminders of upcoming due dates and to avoid procrastination. Stress will fade, leaving more time for collaboration, project extensions, and other stress-free activities.

5. Maintaining Consistency and Accountability

Our homes can become a place of learning and confidence for students if certain guidelines are followed and mindsets are adjusted. The homework planner should be written and maintained by the student. If parents are writing in the planner, something is not being done right. Parents must remember that the student’s school experience is not their own. They may feel it is their duty to create a foolproof plan and keep their child on track, but they are only creating an opportunity for the child to further detach from their work and the responsibility that comes with it. When handed a completed planner at the end of the school day, parents might feel as though success has been achieved and feel good about their now well-behaved student. Unfortunately, that’s a false sense of security, as the homework still sits on the child’s desk.

By using a homework planner, creating a daily routine in a household can be both manageable and predictable for children, which will allow them to feel supported and comfortable in their learning environment while in the home. It will act as a symbol of security, routine, and will provide consistency for students in a time where they may feel that everything else in life is chaotic. Though the world outside our doors is changing and routines from the past are no longer our present reality, children can still find security and a sense of normalcy.
