As workers become more mobile and transportation improves, the workforce responds by becoming much more diverse and competitive. As a result, workers with good communication skills and knowledge of the English language often have an advantage in the marketplace. This holds true for both native English speakers as well as non-native speakers.

In this digital age, the importance of English language skills cannot be understated. It is the third in worldwide popularity after Chinese and Spanish, and it is spoken by a quarter of the world population. It is near impossible to excel in a global economy without some understanding of conversational and professional English at the least. Half of the Internet content is observed to be in English, while productive engagement for digital literacy requires at least understanding in reading and writing. The standard business language is English. The TOEIC, TOEFL, or IELTS assessments to obtain a measure of one’s English proficiency can open opportunities in higher studies and even in immigration.

2. Challenges in English Language Education

Taking into account the perceptible English language gap between Chinese students and their counterparts in the rest of Asia in the conditions of equal nominal English tuition duration, we argue that the returns to English instruction among these countries are not equivalent. In China, we believe that the low returns can be attributed to various detailed aspects in the prevailing English teaching system in Chinese schools. Many research reports, based on practice or pedagogy, have identified the issue of poor returns across the Chinese schools. However, there may be no comprehensive examination of systemic determinants that limit the positive impacts of English instruction in Chinese schools. In particular, none of the reports offer student achievement comparisons among countries to provide criteria for the instructional aspects specific to the Chinese settings. Therefore, we take an empirical approach to give evidence of the reduced instructional effectiveness.

The prevalence of English as the global language is increasingly clear; educational institutions worldwide are instituting English as a school subject, preparing students to participate in the global economy. However, the penetration of English into the major educational systems is not a fully successful matter. English language education faces many difficulties in a range of territories with tougher resource restrictions. The situation in China is representative. Although there has been a long history of compulsory English education and China has the world’s largest population of English-as-a-Second-Language learners, the English proficiency of Chinese students is modestly higher than the international mean and lower than those in Asian developing countries like Singapore, Malaysia, and India.

3. Strategies for Effective English Language Instruction

Because communicating and interacting is a natural process, so is language learning. Early childhood educators can promote natural English language development. Based on two-way conversation in the classroom, introduction of curriculum that is vibrant, engaging, and provides both explicit and implicit required language experience, identification of the vocabulary and sentence structure that will leverage for an ultimate EAL learner to be successful in the lesson and long-term acquisition of the language of the lesson, clear articulation of new words on the teacher’s part and repeated use of them, opportunities to practice new vocabulary and language usage not only in dialogue with the teacher but also relevant to the class alike, development of the parent-accredited home environment to support the natural development of language outside the classroom and to look for parent/child feedback.

One way to realize the goal of proficiency for all is to have effective English language instruction for our English learners. However, effective teaching for English learners is not just good teaching; every teacher must be prepared to provide effective core ESL strategies in order to help our English learners succeed. For this reason, language develops through the interaction in which people engage. English learners develop language skills by engaging in meaningful conversations, working together on projects, and discussing their options in socially and academically beyond the classroom. Communicating is foundational to being human. Effective communication skills are essential for navigating culture, building strong relationships, and maintaining a healthy and successful life at school and beyond school.

4. Benefits of English Language Education

Finding a qualified job becomes easier, and people learn new information, develop themselves, and succeed. One of the most important reasons why English language education is so important is that it is the main language of the Internet. It is helpful for individuals who have strong internet access to access the information they are curious about and to be able to communicate with different cultures. The Internet provides communication with people from different nations with different cultures. If they can speak English, they find the chance to impress people from different nationalities, to have a wider social network, to lead a more privileged life in the business world, and to help in other areas. A child learns a thousand words in Turkish, while a child learns over three thousand words in English. When more words are learned, it is automatically done not only in the language but also in foreign language courses. The child’s pronunciation, vocabulary, and speaking skills are developed. It helps improve foreign language listening comprehension. Active and equivocal language is used, enriching and supporting individuals’ recognition skills.

English language education is an issue that is discussed throughout the media. When providing education, giving importance to teaching English can be particularly effective in many ways. A child who is aware of both their native language knowledge and English language knowledge develops individually and is prevented from misunderstanding any lesson. Since the child can express themselves much more effectively, their self-confidence and interpersonal relationships are quickly established. A child who can express themselves easily develops socially, reveals their individual personality, and learns empathy. In English language education, it is important to consider which language skills are taught, how they are taught, and by whom they are taught. At the core of the problems we are facing today is our inability to recognize that ELT practice, as mostly carried out in our country, is wrong. That kind of English teaching and learning curriculum and practice will not help students achieve the kind of goals we have in mind when we teach English – that of mastering English so that they can read, write, listen, and speak, if necessary, in English, thus being able to enter the global community and benefit from global knowledge. There are also many teachers who actually have the knowledge of what the field is all about but, due to various constraints, are unable to implement it in their classroom. Unfortunately, there are many teachers who have yet to understand that if they would like their students to achieve the aims of ELT, they must also have ELT knowledge, including the knowledge of what good ELT practice is. The professional organizations at different levels and different government institutions must take part and help them meet the ideals.

While up until a few years ago, Indonesia has not been able to have a good result from the teaching and learning of English, as can be seen from the many graduates, particularly from the countryside, who were unable to meet the demands of the work environment, such as the Pettier air hostess school scandal in 2013, and students unable to take TOEFL in 2014, something has been happening in the ELT landscape of our country with the government increasing the teachers’ salaries, and many policy programs and programs to develop school principals. We need to take advantage of these developments and make significant changes in the educational practices we carry out in the classroom or in the schools. At least, we need to recognize what good ELT is all about.

In this article, I have discussed the importance of teaching and learning the English language in Indonesia, its position vis-à-vis other disciplines of study, and what kind of goals of teaching English that, ideally, we should have in mind when we prepare to enter the teaching profession. I have also provided an account of the development of English language teaching in Indonesia and the various ELT policies and programs that have been implemented by the government.
